Reportedly the early three element lenses supplied with the Makina were a bit lacking in contrast. This has been born out in the films put through our example, even allowing for a hundred years of minor scratches. Negatives have generally been rather flat, although the lighting conditions weren't in its favour on this day.

This sad sight is the hulk of the Kajsamoor, twin masted Ketch built in Norway in 1939. At the time the photograph was taken she was trapped inside Charlestown harbour in Cornwall. The owners might protest but she's all but left to her fate after rolling onto her beam ends and flooding a while back. Although tied up and floats off every tide she's looking very dilapidated with her masts peeling, rigging rotting and her taffrail falling away in places. For Kajsamoor the future looks a little bleak.

As for the Makina, which is actually older, it's been a journey of mixed emotions. The camera actually works well enough, but it's awkward to use and because the shutter is mounted at right angles to common practice I fouled up a number of exposures thinking the shutter speed was at the top, making for a two stop error each time. Added to this a persistent loss of focus due to the Plaubel roll film adaptor being poorly made and it's not been a joyous user experience.
