On these early Leica models you will notice that the top housing directly under the speed selector has a rounded shape in planform, later a more angular design was adopted. As the camera rotates you will see a small circular section in the back covering. This is a blanking plate that screws in place, it's purpose was to allow each camera to be matched to the supplied lens. The hole created when removed aligns with a another in the pressure plate allowing viewing of the focus.When this camera was recently acquired the original matched lens was missing so we acquired a slightly later nickle Elmar to use with the camera. In order to check focus we stuck a graticule over the hole on the pressure plate the same thickness as a piece of film with the blanking plate removed, mounted and set the Elmar to infinity then focussed through the front with another calibrated camera also set to infinity. Lucklily it seemed close enough and we left the original shims in place.
