The Brownie has been photographed with the lens panel removed, as was required periodically to clean the back of the lens and the sighting optics. The film carrier has also been withdrawn and placed to one side. Many box cameras employ a similar method to load the film, the wind on knob is pulled out and this releases the film carrier. The construction of the metal Brownies allows them to be dismantled for cleaning in a few minutes.
