Kiev 4M, 35mm rangefinder camera, c1958

Russian Kiev 4M 35mm coupled rangefinder camera developed from the Kiev 2 which was itself a copy of the Zeiss Contax II. This is a true red version, having probably spent its working life in Vietnam. A fact that hasn't done it many favours, as the humidity has wrought havoc with the gears. Its Zeiss origins shine through however and much of the design can still be appreciated - particularly during the extensive strip that was required to get this partially working example, shall we say - less partially working! One of the delightful features is the way the entire shutter mechanism including the timing gears and wind on turret lift out in one piece. Very neat!

It was donated by Nguyen Tuyet Mai, Jan. 2001, closing a chapter in its life, and starting a new chapter in mine.
